Eye Conditions on Long Island

Hyperopia

When you have farsightedness (hyperopia), you can see distant objects clearly, but nearby objects may appear blurry. In most cases, farsightedness is present at birth and tends to run in families. The condition can be easily corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common refractive error that can cause blurry vision due to an irregularly shaped cornea or lens. The most common way to correct astigmatism is with prescription contact lenses or glasses.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is age-related farsightedness and is considered a natural part of the aging process that often begins in a person's 40s. People with presbyopia may find it difficult to read small print or clearly see near objects. Presbyopia treatment often consists of prescription glasses or contacts to correct vision.

Myopia

A person with myopia, also known as nearsightedness or shortsightedness, sees distant objects as blurry or out of focus, such as the board in a classroom, the television, or the clock on the wall. During your eye exam, the eye doctor will note a negative sign such as -1.00 or -2.25 to indicate myopia, which can be corrected with corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Dry Eye Treatments, Long Island

Dry eye syndrome is a common eye condition that causes discomfort and can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms may include a gritty or burning feeling in the eyes, hazy vision, excessive tearing, dryness, and redness.

At Vision Source Signature Eyecare, we provide a variety of treatments for dry eye, which are personalized for each patient’s needs.

Although artificial tears or lubricating eye drops can temporarily alleviate dry eye symptoms, we recommend that people see an eye doctor like , as these temporary solutions don’t address the cause of the condition.

Our eye doctor will likely offer prescription eye drops to reduce inflammation and promote healthy tear production. They may also recommend punctal plugs, a treatment involving small, removable devices inserted into the tear ducts to keep the tears from draining too quickly. This promotes adequate moisture in the eyes.

Additionally, they may also suggest lifestyle changes to prevent dry eye or to stop symptoms from worsening. This can include reducing digital screen time, avoiding exposure to irritants, refraining from smoking, and using a humidifier, among many others.

Scleral lenses are also an effective dry eye treatment. This is because they vault over the cornea and sit comfortably on the whites of the eye (the sclera), resulting in a space between the cornea and the lens. The lens is filled with a saline solution that can keep the eyes moisturized.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that, if left untreated, can lead to permanent vision loss. Increased pressure inside the eye can damage the optic nerve, resulting in impaired vision.

Symptoms are usually only noticeable when the condition has progressed to a later stage, which is why we recommended regular eye exams for early detection and treatment.

Our glaucoma treatment options vary depending on the individual. If you’re at risk for glaucoma or have any concerns about your eye health, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with us for a comprehensive eye exam.

Cataracts Co-Management

Cataracts are a common age-related eye condition that results in blurry vision and eventually blindness if not treated.

We offer comprehensive cataract co-management services to help our patients maintain their vision and quality of life. Our optometrists work closely with top cataract surgeons to offer pre-and post-operative tailored care.
For cataract patients, we can also recommend cataract multifocal implants to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses following surgery.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration refers to a progressive eye disease that affects central vision.

We specialize in the diagnosis and management of macular degeneration. We use some of the best optical diagnostic technology to detect the disease early, and offer a personalized plan to slow its progression.

If you have a family history of macular degeneration or have recently been diagnosed with the disease, set up an appointment with us now.
